Dixie Chopper used several electric PTO clutch paths across different mower series, deck sizes, engine setups, and production years. The safest way to choose the correct replacement is to match your original clutch part number first, then confirm the crankshaft bore, pulley diameter, rotation direction, wiring connector, and anti-rotation setup.

This guide compares the main Dixie Chopper PTO clutch replacement paths, including 500012, 500144, 500056, and 500067.

Fitment warning: These clutches are not universal. Similar-looking PTO clutches can have different bore sizes, pulley diameters, rotation directions, wire harnesses, or anti-rotation brackets.

Dixie Chopper 500012 PTO Clutch Path

The Dixie Chopper 500012 PTO clutch is a Warner-style replacement path commonly associated with select Silver Eagle, Run Behind, and related Dixie Chopper applications. This path uses a 1-1/8 inch bore, a 7-inch class pulley, and CCW rotation on supported models.

Use this path when your original clutch, parts manual, or mower documentation shows 500012 or its confirmed cross-reference numbers.

Dixie Chopper 500144 PTO Clutch Path

The Dixie Chopper 500144 PTO clutch is tied to the Ogura GT1A-EH01 clutch architecture. It is commonly associated with select Dixie Chopper Zee 2 applications and may also appear in broader cross-reference data under Ogura, Husqvarna / AYP, Ferris, and Gravely numbers.

This clutch path uses a 1-1/8 inch bore, 6-inch class pulley, and CCW rotation. Do not confuse it with 500012 just because both use a 1-1/8 inch bore and CCW rotation. The pulley size and fitment path are different.

Dixie Chopper 500056 PTO Clutch Path

The Dixie Chopper 500056 PTO clutch is the major rotation trap in this group. It is commonly associated with select Dixie Chopper Classic and Xcaliber applications and uses a 1-1/8 inch bore, 7-3/8 inch pulley, and CW rotation.

This clutch should not be treated as interchangeable with 500012 or 500144. Those paths use CCW rotation. Installing the wrong rotation clutch can damage the clutch and prevent proper blade engagement.

Dixie Chopper 500067 PTO Clutch Path

The Dixie Chopper 500067 PTO clutch is a separate 1-inch bore path commonly associated with select Iron Eagle and Magnum applications. It uses a 1-inch bore, 6-inch pulley, and CCW rotation.

This path is often grouped near Ariens / Gravely and Murray-style 1-inch bore clutches in broad aftermarket catalogs, but PTO Direct USA keeps it on a Dixie Chopper-specific page so buyers can verify the correct wiring, connector, and anti-rotation setup.

How to Choose the Correct Dixie Chopper PTO Clutch

Do not choose by brand or mower shape alone. Before ordering, confirm these details:

  • Original clutch number: 500012, 500144, 500056, 500067, or another confirmed Dixie Chopper number
  • Crankshaft bore: 1 inch or 1-1/8 inch
  • Pulley diameter: 6 inch, 6 inch class, 7 inch class, or 7-3/8 inch depending on the clutch path
  • Rotation direction: CW or CCW from pulley side
  • Connector style: compare the plug to the product photos
  • Anti-rotation setup: confirm the stop, bracket, tab, or slot matches your mower
  • Model and serial information: especially important on commercial Dixie Chopper applications

Common Wrong-Fit Traps

1. 1-Inch Bore vs 1-1/8 Inch Bore

A 1-inch bore clutch will not fit a 1-1/8 inch crankshaft. A 1-1/8 inch bore clutch will not properly clamp on a 1-inch crankshaft. Always measure the crankshaft or confirm the original clutch number before ordering.

2. CW vs CCW Rotation

Dixie Chopper 500056 uses CW rotation, while 500012, 500144, and 500067 use CCW rotation on their supported paths. Rotation is not optional. It affects the internal clutch design and engagement behavior.

3. Similar Pulley Sizes Are Not Always Interchangeable

A 6-inch pulley, 7-inch class pulley, and 7-3/8 inch pulley can change belt speed, belt tension, deck torque, and bearing load. Match the pulley diameter to your original clutch path.

4. Wiring and Anti-Rotation Differences

Some broad aftermarket listings group clutches together because the bore and pulley look close. That can still be wrong if the wire harness, connector, or anti-rotation bracket does not match your mower.

Dixie Chopper Blades Won’t Engage?

If your Dixie Chopper blades will not engage, the PTO clutch may be worn, but switches, wiring, voltage drop, belt drag, seized deck components, or a weak battery can cause similar symptoms.

Common PTO clutch failure symptoms include:

  • Blades will not engage when the PTO switch is turned on
  • The clutch clicks but the blades do not spin
  • Weak or delayed blade engagement
  • Blades slow down under load
  • The clutch works cold, then fails hot after 10 to 30 minutes
  • Burning smell, bearing noise, or visible heat damage near the clutch

A worn PTO clutch coil can sometimes work when cold, then weaken as heat builds. This can cause weak engagement, intermittent operation, or slipping under load once the mower is hot.

Start with the PTO clutch won’t engage guide. If the clutch clicks but the blades do not move, read the PTO clutch clicks but blades won’t spin guide. If the clutch fades, slips, or loses blade speed under load, see the PTO clutch slipping under load guide.

Installation and Removal Note

Before installing a replacement PTO clutch, inspect the crankshaft, keyway, mounting bolt, washer, deck belt, idlers, spindle bearings, wiring connector, and anti-rotation bracket. A seized spindle or dragging belt can damage a new clutch quickly.

If the old PTO clutch is rusted, seized, stuck on the crankshaft, or will not slide off by hand, do not hammer or pry against the engine. Read the PTO clutch stuck on crankshaft guide before forcing removal.
