Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 42: Upgrading a Stamped Deck to a Fabricated Deck

Illustrated comparison of stamped and fabricated 42-inch deck shells for a Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 upgrade

A fabricated deck upgrade on a Cub Cadet Ultima ZT1 42 starts with matching the deck, PTO clutch and mounting hardware as a system. An owner of a 2024 stamped-deck machine shared a conversion that highlights an easily overlooked detail: the replacement clutch needed a different anti-rotation bracket, mounted in a different location.

This guide follows that owner's account and compares the relevant factory parts lists. It explains what to check before attempting the swap; it is not a Cub Cadet-approved conversion kit or a fitment guarantee for every mower carrying the ZT1 name.

The 42-inch ZT1 configurations being compared

The original mower in the account is model 17AIEACSA10, purchased as a 2024 Ultima ZT1 with a 42-inch stamped deck. The factory fabricated-deck comparison is 17BIEACEA10, the ZT1 42 FAB. Both configurations use the Kawasaki FR651V engine rated at 21.5 HP and 726cc. Cub Cadet's stamped model page and FAB model page identify the respective machines.

Component 42-inch stamped configuration 42-inch fabricated configuration
Model used for the 2024 parts comparison 17AIEACSA10 17BIEACEA10
Deck shell in the owner's account 603P08691 603P07639C
PTO clutch 917-05121 917-05209
Clutch stop bracket 703-14922 703-13723; powder-black part 703-13723-0637
Keeper grommet 731-10576 731-10576
Deck belt 754P06134 754P06134
Spindle assembly 618P09260 618P09260

The belt, spindle and clutch entries come from the 2024 stamped deck diagram and 2024 fabricated deck diagram, with the keeper components listed in the stamped keeper diagram and fabricated keeper diagram. These are OEM diagrams reproduced by PartsTree.

The FAB diagram shows an earlier shell number, 603P07639. Cub Cadet's current 603P07639C shell page lists that number among its replacements. The owner also referenced model 17YIEACE010; use that machine's own model-and-serial parts lookup if it is your donor. A shared commercial name or engine specification does not establish that every production version interchanges.

Deck shell versus complete deck: check before buying

Cub Cadet identifies both 603P08691 and 603P07639C as deck shells. A shell number alone does not mean you are buying an assembled mowing deck.

For a complete donor deck, ask the seller to identify the donor mower and confirm the included spindles, blades, pulleys, idler assembly, spring, belt, belt covers, discharge chute, gauge wheels and mounting hardware. For a shell build, compare each component against the fabricated-deck parts list before transferring it.

The owner reported that the hanger hardware matched. The shared belt and spindle numbers support part of that comparison, but the two deck lists also contain differences. Treat each reused part as a separate fitment check instead of assuming the entire stamped deck transfers unchanged.

Why the PTO clutch and stop bracket matter

The stamped configuration lists 917-05121; the factory FAB comparison lists 917-05209. That difference deserves attention even though both mowers have a 42-inch cutting width. For this conversion, confirm the intended clutch, crankshaft mounting stack and keeper arrangement together.

The anti-rotation bracket restrains the clutch's stationary field assembly while the shaft and driven components rotate. It needs the specified clearance so the assembly can accommodate movement without binding. A bracket that holds the field rigidly or pushes it out of alignment can overload its bearing. Warner Electric's installation requirements specifically call for axial and radial free play and show that the bracket must not bind or bottom in the slot.

What happened in this owner's installation

The original keeper was too long for the 917-05209 arrangement and interfered with aligning the clutch to the crankshaft. The owner replaced it with 703-13723-0637, the powder-black clutch stop bracket, and reported moving the mounting location from the right side of the frame to the left.

That is a useful detail to investigate on the same configuration. Confirm the frame location against the correct keeper diagram and the actual replacement clutch. Establish left and right from the operator's seated position when comparing the mower with service instructions. Use the bracket to restrain rotation with proper clearance; it should not pull the clutch into position.

With the replacement bracket installed, the owner reported approximately 1/16 inch of space at each edge of the keeper slot around the dampener grommet. That measurement describes this installation. It is not a universal clearance specification, and visible side clearance alone does not verify clearance in every direction.

Check the fastener before reusing the old bolt

The account also describes tapping the replacement bracket to accept the original bolt. Keep that as a record of the owner's work, rather than a standard conversion step.

The FAB keeper parts list includes two screw references: 710-1260A, 5/16-18, and 710-06256, M8-1.25. These thread forms are different. Verify the applicable screw and thread-forming requirements for your actual frame and bracket with the model-and-serial parts information. Do not assume either screw, or the old bolt, is interchangeable.

Will the belt run at the correct height?

This was the owner's main question, and it remains a physical installation check. Matching deck width, engine family and belt number is useful evidence, but it does not measure the position of the clutch pulley on a converted machine.

Our assessment is that the critical comparison is the complete installed geometry: where the clutch pulley sits on the crankshaft, how the deck hangs, and how the belt approaches the deck pulleys. Moving the keeper can resolve interference; it does not, by itself, prove correct belt alignment.

  • Clutch position: confirm the specified crankshaft spacers, drive pulley, washer and clutch orientation. Avoid adding washers to improvise a different belt height.
  • Deck position: confirm the lift connections, side-to-side level, front-to-rear pitch and operating height against the applicable mower instructions.
  • Belt path: verify the specified routing, seating in the pulley grooves, tensioner operation and clearance from keepers and guards.
  • Deck travel: with the engine disabled, check the intended lift range for interference. The deck changes position as it lifts, so a single visual check at one height is incomplete.

A belt that climbs a pulley edge, rubs hardware or repeatedly comes off calls for an alignment and routing inspection before more mowing. A different belt length is not evidence that the clutch mounting stack is correct.

A practical order for the conversion

Use the exact operator's manual and service information for removal, assembly, adjustments and torque values. Park on level ground, disengage the PTO, set the parking brake, stop the engine, remove the key and disable starting as instructed. Let hot components cool and support the deck or raised mower securely.

  1. Build the parts comparison first. Record the original model and serial number, donor configuration and clutch numbers. Compare the deck, lift, clutch keeper and drive diagrams before ordering.
  2. Remove the stamped deck. Follow the model's procedure for releasing belt tension, removing the belt from the PTO and disconnecting the supported deck from its hangers. Cub Cadet's Ultima blade replacement guide includes deck-removal steps.
  3. Prepare the fabricated assembly. Install or transfer only components confirmed against its parts list. Inspect bearings, blades, pulleys and the tensioner while access is easy.
  4. Fit the clutch and keeper. Follow the required mounting-stack order, fit the correct stop bracket and grommet, and verify free play. Route the wiring clear of moving parts. Tighten the mounting bolt to the specification for the actual installation.
  5. Hang, route and adjust. Reconnect the deck, route the belt using the proper diagram, and check level, pitch and clearances. Cub Cadet's Ultima belt guide covers routing and cover reinstallation.
  6. Complete the operating checks. Reinstall guards and discharge protection before testing. Follow the new clutch manufacturer's burnishing procedure and check engagement, disengagement and blade stopping from the normal operating position. Shut down and disable starting before inspecting the installation again.

Burnishing and the owner's 55 ft-lb recheck

The owner reported following the burnishing instructions, running the mower for approximately an hour, then checking the crankshaft bolt again at 55 ft-lb. That is an encouraging initial report; it does not establish long-term durability or a torque specification for other installations.

Use the torque value and fastener conditions specified for the clutch, bolt and mower being assembled. For example, Warner's instructions distinguish torque by bolt thread and grade and identify the condition of the fastener. A torque reading also does not independently prove that the mounting stack is correctly clamped.

Burnishing seats the new clutch's friction surfaces. Follow the instructions supplied with the clutch you buy; Warner's installation and burnishing resources provide the manufacturer's procedures for its products. PTO Direct USA's PTO clutch installation guide also explains the mounting checks to review before mowing.

Finding a fabricated deck on eBay
