This quick-reference guide covers the John Deere X580 lawn and garden tractor with either a 48A or 54A Accel Deep mower deck.
The confirmed electric PTO clutch path is AM144169 / Warner 5219-156. The clutch does not change with deck width. Deere’s published X580 replacement-parts guide does not show a tractor serial-number breakpoint for the clutch or mower-deck parts covered here.
The important ordering splits are the installed deck code, belt position and blade profile. Both decks use M169485, now serviced through UC39236, as the primary engine-to-deck belt. The 48A uses M169500, now serviced through UC39235, as its secondary spindle-drive belt. The 54A uses M169486 in the secondary position.
Do not combine all X580 blade numbers into one universal blade path. Deere lists separate standard, high-lift, mulch and retrofit blade configurations according to the installed deck.

Warner identifies 5219-156 as a 12-volt, 125 lb-ft clutch with a 1-inch bore, 5.59-inch pulley/flange outside diameter, counter-clockwise rotation and integral electrical connection. Warner also lists AM144169 as the corresponding manufacturer part number.
Important: AM141536 is used on many earlier X500-Series tractors, including several X500, X520, X530 and X540 applications. It is not the normal X580 clutch path. Deere lists the X580 under AM144169.
How the X580 Two-Belt Deck Drive Works
- The primary engine-to-deck belt transfers power from the PTO clutch to the mower-deck drive.
- The secondary spindle-drive belt routes that power through the deck pulley system to the blade spindles.
- Both the 48A and 54A use M169485 / UC39236 in the primary position.
- The 48A uses M169500 / UC39235 in the secondary position.
- The 54A uses M169486 in the secondary position.
A belt can be listed for the John Deere X580 and still be wrong if it is selected for the wrong deck width or belt position.

Before Ordering
- Confirm the tractor identification tag says John Deere X580.

Common PTO Clutch and Deck Symptoms
- Blades do not engage when the PTO switch is activated
- The clutch clicks but the primary deck belt does not begin turning
- The primary belt turns but the secondary belt or blades do not
- Blades disengage after the clutch becomes hot
- A belt slips, squeals, smokes or repeatedly comes off
- Grinding or rough bearing noise comes from a spindle or pulley
- The mower deck vibrates or leaves an uneven cut
- The tractor moves poorly even though the mower deck operates normally
Treat the clutch and mower deck as one drive system. A seized spindle, failed idler, incorrect belt or damaged pulley can overload the clutch or cause a new belt to fail. If the tractor itself moves poorly while the deck operates normally, inspect the separate M174585 traction-drive path.
