Many commercial PTO clutches look nearly identical at first glance. A clutch may share the same 1-1/8 inch crankshaft bore, CCW rotation, and 7-inch class pulley, but still belong to a different fitment path because of pulley diameter, connector style, harness routing, D-drive setup, or mounting requirements.
This guide compares three commonly confused commercial PTO clutch paths: Toro / Exmark 116-1620, Cub Cadet / MTD 917-04967, and Ferris / Snapper Pro / Simplicity 5100875.
Quick Comparison Table
| Part Number Path | Common Brands | Bore | Pulley | Rotation | Best Product Page |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 116-1620 | Toro / Exmark | 1-1/8" | 7.39" | CCW | Shop 116-1620 |
| 917-04967 | Cub Cadet / MTD | 1-1/8" | 7.34" | CCW | Shop 917-04967 |
| 5100875 | Ferris / Snapper Pro / Simplicity | 1-1/8" | 7.19" to 7.25" | CCW | Shop 5100875 |
Fitment rule: Do not choose by bore size alone. Always match your original clutch number first, then compare pulley diameter, rotation, connector style, harness routing, and mounting setup.

Why Similar PTO Clutches Get Mixed Together
Some aftermarket catalogs group these clutch paths together because the broad specs look close: 1-1/8 inch bore, CCW rotation, commercial torque rating, and a 7-inch class pulley. That does not always mean they are the best fitment page for your mower.
PTO Direct USA keeps these major paths separate so buyers can confirm the correct:
- Original clutch part number
- Brand and mower series
- Pulley diameter
- Connector style
- Harness routing
- D-drive or mounting setup
- Anti-rotation bracket fitment
- Product photos
Common Wrong-Fit Traps
1. Bore size does not prove the whole fitment
All three paths above use a 1-1/8 inch bore, but that does not automatically make the clutch interchangeable. Pulley size, wiring, connector style, and mounting details still matter.
2. Pulley diameter changes deck speed
A 7.19-inch pulley, 7.34-inch pulley, and 7.39-inch pulley can change belt speed, deck torque, belt tension, and blade performance. Always match the clutch path your mower calls for.
3. Connector and harness details matter
Two clutches can share bore, pulley class, and rotation but still use different connector, cable, or harness arrangements. Compare the product images to your original clutch before ordering.
4. D-drive and mounting setup matter
Some mower platforms use specific mounting or D-drive hardware to keep the clutch properly positioned. Do not assume a visually similar commercial PTO clutch includes the same mounting setup.

Symptoms of a Failing Commercial PTO Clutch
A failing electric PTO clutch may cause:
- Blades will not engage when the PTO switch is turned on
- The clutch clicks but the blades do not spin
- Weak or delayed blade engagement
- Deck belt slips under load
- Blades slow down in heavy grass
- Clutch works cold, then fails hot after 10 to 30 minutes
- Burning smell, bearing noise, or visible heat damage near the clutch
A worn PTO clutch coil can sometimes work when cold, then weaken after heat builds up. This can cause intermittent blade engagement, slipping under load, or blade speed loss once the mower is hot.
Start diagnosis with the PTO clutch won’t engage guide. If the clutch clicks but blades do not move, read the PTO clutch clicks but blades won’t spin guide. If blade speed fades under load, see the PTO clutch slipping under load guide.
Installation and Removal Note
Before installing a replacement PTO clutch, inspect the crankshaft, keyway, mounting bolt, washer, belt condition, idlers, spindle bearings, wiring connector, harness routing, and anti-rotation bracket.
If your old clutch is rusted, seized, stuck on the crankshaft, or will not slide off by hand, do not hammer or pry against the engine. Read the PTO clutch stuck on crankshaft guide before forcing removal.
